The underlying reason for the desperate exodus of Cambodian people—which led to this tragedy—was the brutal genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge, who were fellow Cambodians. Thailand's reasons at that time: During that period, Thailand was already receiving hundreds of thousands of refugees from Indochina, exceeding its capacity. Furthermore, there were security problems due to communist-affiliated armed groups infiltrating the refugee population, and the international community at that time was reluctant to accept these refugees into a third country. Migrants died from stepping on landmines (the area was a war zone heavily mined by the Khmer Rouge and various Cambodian factions), falling off cliffs, dehydration, and illness while making the journey back to Cambodia. A film produced to stoke nationalism and incite hatred against Thailand by selectively presenting only one side of a past tragedy, distorting the facts through selective editing, and ignoring the actual causes in order to portray Thailand as the sole villain.
