@guardianaustralia: For months, artists and activists have been calling on the prime minister Anthony Albanese to act on the AI boom as data centre pop up around the country. Today he made a major speech at the University of Sydney addressing copyright, the regulation of data centres and the future of AI in Australia.
I think this is great. Big Corps and AI is coming, and we cannot stop it. But Albo is doing good things to control it. Are politics perfect?! NEVER! But he’s done more for Australia in the last 3 years than the conservatives did in 10+ years!!

This is great. If more countries follow AI will either adapt or die, either option is good for everyone.

This is genuinely fucking terrible and fills me with dread. Good god. Money will always control everything including politics. It’s so incredibly sad for our planet and future 😔

The AI bubble is probably going to go pop before we get any data centres built here, and we'll be much better off for it.

We will no longer have a society woth out it. Like recreactional substances, it is jere to stay. The question is about how as a society are we going to react to it? Banning it makes it pop up underground, harder to track and ignoring all policies and standards. Legitimising a pathway allows them to follow the rules or be punished and work above board. I agree in the control approach, but how is the question... and how much?

Australia also has solid copyright law, like once something is in writing, it's your's.

Artist control dissapears once that data is put into the model, they dont have control over what the AI does with that info, and theres constant instances reported of AI models learning to lie to the reseachers, blackmailing employees to execute its interpretation of the instruction given.
love the reporting of this, but god the government is fence sitting something that cant have government taking a fence sitter position like this of "yeah we'll let em in and give them info, but we told them to be good so we should be right"

Literally not practical - the only way australia can do this is by them suing other foreign companies - but then trump will stop them. All this does is make it impossible for australian companies to compete with american unless they move to the US

it isn't theft when a human is inspired by other creators. no conceptual reason it's different when AI does it, other than the empty 'it's a machine' argument.
