The U.S. then backed the Shah's authoritarian rule for over 25 years. That created widespread anger among Iranians, which fueled the 1979 revolution that brought Ayatollah Khomeini and the current Islamic regime to power. So while the U.S. didn't create the regime on purpose, its actions helped create the conditions that allowed it to emerge.
