Arch Series - episode 1 Completed in 2021, 130 William is a 66-story residential skyscraper in Lower Manhattan designed by David Adjaye. Rising approximately 800 feet, it was Adjaye’s first skyscraper in New York and first high-rise residential project in the United States. Inspired by Lower Manhattan’s historic masonry warehouses and commercial buildings, the design rejects the glass curtain-wall language common to contemporary Manhattan towers in favor of material weight, texture and permanence. Historic masonry arches become the defining motif. The façade consists of approximately 1,100 custom precast concrete panels, each roughly 30 by 12 feet, manufactured in Ontario using custom molds and extensive hand finishing. Reinforced concrete, dark pigment and black stone and granite aggregate create the distinctive rough, volcanic texture. Arched window assemblies were integrated into the panels before they were transported to New York and installed on the tower. The result is a highly articulated façade whose concrete elements, bronze-framed windows and recessed openings create depth and variation across the elevation. The concrete façade complements an all-concrete structural system of cast-in-place columns, shear walls and two-way flat-plate slabs. High-strength concrete, reaching approximately 14,000 psi, provides stiffness and strength, while thicker slabs in the upper floors add mass to help control wind-induced movement. Beyond its exterior, 130 William was conceived as a vertical community with residences, retail, recreational facilities, terraces, shared amenities and an observation level.
