@whatsername1.0: So many Scottish people don’t want to speak the way they are brought up to speak because of what? You don’t like the sound of it? It’s cringey? You’d rather we all spoke English? Hmmm #ayrshire
It pissed me off that in Brave, in a film set in Scotland with Scots accents, there was still a joke about Doric being unintelligible.

I immigrated from scotland in 2008 at nine years old. I can still turn my accent on and off and I’ve heard so many of my relatives and other people say they hate their accent, but it just reminds me of home and it will always be a part of me I hold dear

I feel this but not in the same way as an Irish American (6th gen)so the first of my family wasn’t considered white when they came here and so they left their culture behind to assimilate and now my family has nothing to tie us to our Irish roots except green eyes and ginger hair. So I’ve been wanting to learn Gaelic and my parents are like what’s the point it’s a dead language.

one thing i’ve always hated is the fact i’ve never even been given the opportunity to learn gaelic like surely that’s what we should be learning in schools rather than french

For commenters: she's talking about Scots. NOT Scottish Gaelic. There's a *huge* difference; they're NOT THE SAME LANGUAGE.

And now Nigel farage wants to criminalise the use of Gaelic in politics, with a six moths jail time for candidates who use it on campaign materials

It’s classism. People often say the way we speak in Ayrshire is schemey but in reality we speak Scot’s, Ayrshire Scot’s. It’s rooted in community for us but others will see us as less than

I was taught in school to 'speak properly'. Speaking Scots was an absolute no. I wound up with this rubbish neutral accent and spend every day trying to claw my way back to my Dundee roots 🥲

i never got taught Gaelic, a large majority of Scots weren't either, our slang and accent is the closest thing we have to our language

my daughter (just turned 1) has picked up aye, and when she first started doing it my mum had the audacity to try to correct her! "We say yes, we speak proper" I told her fuck yeah we speak proper, proper Scots, she can say aye, it's her language. It's also incredibly funny to have a toddler enthusiastically responding "aye!" when she's happy 😂

It’s the same in Wales, get called “too Welsh” or that the “language is pointless as it’s dying” when that’s simply not true. Keep sharing your culture. From one Celtic nation to another, never stop sharing ❤️

I hate that I was never taught Gaelic. Even though it’s technically offered at my school, you’re only allowed to take it if you went to a Gaelic primary??? Wtf???

Big fan of this as a kind of cousin from across the sea. In Québec our French is constantly judged as "improper" but it's our culture and it's important to protect and defend it.

As someone who was told off for using “slang” at school I’ll never tone down my Scots, even in my professional job. This is our language

So many people don’t recognise it as a real language, it just goes to show what the years of being told it’s just an accent has done for a lot of people
