The ELKE (Elevated Kinetic Energy) was an experimental US light tank prototype developed in the early 1980s by Pacific Car and Foundry. Built on an M551 Sheridan chassis, it featured a hydraulic overhead gun mount armed with a 75mm XM274 ARES rapid-fire cannon, prioritizing extreme terrain-hiding capabilities and a low silhouette.Developed as a continuation of previous light tank evaluation programs (like the HSTV-L), ELKE replaced a traditional rotating turret with a hydraulically operated arm. This innovative design allowed the entire cannon to be elevated or lowered from the hull.Key features of the ELKE included:Extreme Elevation/Depression: The hydraulic arm provided up to +25° of elevation and -40° of depression, allowing the crew to engage targets over obstacles while keeping the vehicle hull entirely concealed.High-Velocity Autocannon: The XM274 ARES 75mm smoothbore cannon was magazine-fed and designed to fire a rapid burst of kinetic energy rounds in quick succession.Lightweight Profile: Weighing only around 15 to 16 tons, it retained the C-130 air-transportability of the Sheridan tank.Ultimately, the mechanical complexity of the hydraulic elevating arm and the U.S. Army's determination that a 75mm gun would be ineffective against newer Soviet composite armor led to the program's cancellation. Today, it remains an influential piece of Cold War engineering history that contributed greatly to the development of unmanned turrets and the M8 Armored Gun System.#fyp #viralvideo #warthunder #ukrainian
