As an ex mechanic, I wouldn't have that engine repaired. Even with the the new head and head gasket the block / bottom end has been cooked.

A tip for modern cars a garbage if you replace buy before 2015 vauxhall are ripping you off you can check for head gasket failure in 5 mins the only reason you would need the engine out is a wrapped block the head will have blown or warped I would get a second opinion

Sniff tester only shows internal combustion leak , it could be head gasket/ cracked cylinder or a cracked cylinder head. No one could say it’s the gasket from a sniff test, you would soon moan about it if it still over heated after paying for the head gasket was replaced. A professional garage would advise it has to be stripped down to check properly. Beware of any garage that says it’s definitely the head gasket after just a sniff test.

Hi. Ok. Thanks for further posting. A working full engine with less than 60k miles for your car should be in the region of £1300-£1600. Sadly your friends are advising you very poorly. No hate to them but advising you leave it with Vauxhall is terrible advice.Vauxhall labour rate is £100-£120ph. An independent garage is £60-£100. It’s about 8-13 hrs to fit the engine. Online guidance is 10-15 but that’s if you do it with your feet not your hands. I would put it at £2500-£3000 and that includes buying a used engine. Can maybe do it cheaper trading your engine for a reconditioned one

£4k+ for a Zafira Head Gasket job is beyond taking the piss!! no way should it be £760 to diagnose a failed Head gasket, it takes 5 minutes with a "sniff test"...

I work for a dealer- its odd they should charge you that much- normally a investigation fee yes (generally 1 hour) did you authorise them to investigate the labour to strip down the engine? this all could been achieved in 1 hour doing a sniff test.

Vauxhall sometimes offer credit to spread the cost they do in their garages, ask them x

The legislation on purchasing used cars needs to change. I was sadly in this position 3 years ago. What did you use to purchase the car? Was it cash, a bank loan, car finance, or credit card? Did you

Sadly it’s the labour involved. I was shocked when I had an invoice and it was £55 per hour plus parts etc 😳😳😳

Are you sure they will charge you the £760 on top? We had a similar thing happen to us recently but with Volvo and as we agreed to do the work, they didn’t charge the investigation fee ?

This, diagnosing a head gasket it simple. And as for checking the cylinders? Spark plug out, boroscope in and hey presto, checked. MAX one hours labour even though it only took 20 mins.

As someone who has recently worked at Vauxhall in Gloucester, the hourly rate is £168, which would have been the original quote and would have asked for authorisation for the further time to diagnose which would 1000% mean there was something seized or needed full strip and removal which sounds like that’s the case for other underlying issues, the final quoted price would have this £750 in it! The team there are really good, I hope you get it sorted soon! Nightmare not having a car 🙂

Definitely ask for a breakdown of costs, make sure it is a fixed quote, you don’t want any more surprises! Head gaskets usually fail because something else has gone wrong first, such as overheating, and how has this affected the engine? Is that part of the quite to getting that sorted?

4k for a fitted new engine, is not bad. But if they’ve taken out the engine then it doesn’t surprise me the bill is £700. I think there’s more to this tbh.
