They're selected. The school story, work hard and the reward arrives, isn't true. The hardest worker on your team is rarely the one who moves up. You've watched it happen. Selected means someone in a room you're not in points at a name and says 'them.' That's the whole event. Your job isn't to deserve it. It's to be the obvious name when that moment comes. Which means three things outrank raw output. Can a senior person describe what you own in one sentence. Does your name come up when you're not there. And has the decision-maker personally seen you be good, not heard about it, seen it. Hard work is the entry ticket. It doesn't win the raffle. Get known by the people who do the selecting.
