In this video, I tested "Free VPN" (1M+ installs on Google Play) using a simple setup: 📱 Android connected to my PC hotspot 🖥️ Wireshark monitoring network traffic 🌐 VPN connected and active Despite the VPN being enabled, I was still able to observe DNS requests generated by the device. DNS queries can reveal the domains you're visiting, which means part of your online activity may remain visible outside the VPN tunnel. A recent academic study analyzing hundreds of Android VPN applications found that multiple VPNs leaked user traffic, including DNS requests, often due to implementation and configuration issues. ⚠️ Important: This does not mean VPNs are useless. VPNs can still: ✅ Protect traffic on untrusted Wi‑Fi networks ✅ Reduce visibility for ISPs and network operators ✅ Help bypass network restrictions ✅ Improve privacy when implemented correctly The takeaway: Don't assume every VPN delivers the protection it promises.
