Elle Woods reporting for duty. 💅 Last night I was invited to City Hall for an evening with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. I was thinking about how often as women we're made to feel like if we’re more “serious” work or want to be “taken seriously” we’re encouraged to reject more feminine dressing. At school I was told not to wear makeup if I wanted to be taken seriously! And I was thinking about how work and being professional is seen as being “masculine”. Men went to work and women stayed at home. Men were associated with professionalism and being serious whereas women were interested in fluffy things and a bit frivolous. So when we stepped into the workplace we had to work hard to be taken seriously. We had to almost be more masculine. I did a thread a while ago about women in politics and how dressing has always been used against them. Their clothing choices often weaponised against them to undermine their professionalism. And I see it too - when I go on tv and talk about serious topics, often the male trolls who don’t agree with my opinion will resort to sexism. I don’t mind when people don’t agree with me - but a man is never told he doesn’t know what he’s talking about because of his sex or his outfit or his hair colour. It’s total misogyny. So last night I decided to embrace my inner Elle Woods because I’m feminine and girly AND I’m alpha and intelligent and serious. We can be both and I’m not going to reject femininity to try and make sexist people take me seriously. So here’s to rejecting old stereotypes and being beauty AND brains. Thank you to the Mayor of London for an amazing invitation. He is for sure the most personable politician I’ve met - very down to earth and you can have very normal conversations! I’m excited to keep Working together to push for positive change in my favourite city! 🙏
