@interestingengineering: French startup Tornyol — backed by Y Combinator — has announced the first air-to-air kill of a flying insect by an autonomous micro-drone, taking down a moth in midflight. The 40-gram drone hunts using sonar: it fires ultrasonic pulses and listens with an array of tiny microphones, reading the Doppler signature of an insect's wingbeats to tell a mosquito from a bee. Instead of chemicals, the drone itself is the weapon — it rams straight into the target. #Tornyol #Drones #Mosquitoes #YCombinator #Sonar
Waiting for the A-10 warthog model that can strafe hornet nests.

Mosquitoes don’t actually kill people directly. They are vectors—organisms that transmit disease-causing pathogens. One of the deadliest is the protozoan parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which causes the most severe form of malaria. The parasite is transmitted primarily by female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. So, while the mosquito delivers the parasite, it is Plasmodium falciparum—not the mosquito itself—that causes the disease responsible for so many human deaths.
