Anyone that talks about how they don’t need to be Greek, why does Moana have to be Samoan then?

Greek mythology is not just “pure fantasy.” It comes from the religion, culture, and storytelling tradition of ancient Greece. It reflects how the Greeks understood our gods, history, and society. We still reference our mythology to this day. Based in real places in Greece. The Olympics was named after the Olympic gods (we even had an Airline named after the Olympics), for example King Minos and the Minotaur story was based in Crete and the Labyrinth ruins actually exist and Athens was named after Athena. Also the Greeks have to foot the Tax to film in Greece so the Nolan Odyssey film mock our heritage anyway. We have also been patronised when we speak out about this. They were too chicken to promote this in Greece (where it was mostly filmed) because of the backlash. Ἑλλάς🇬🇷

In an interview Nolan said he learned in Batman you basically need to ignore what others say and do what you think to improve, bitch Batman and Odyssey are not comparable!!

the Viking ship is insane 😭 the director probably played the Assassin's Creed games to prepare to shoot this movie, that's the only explanation

If the odyssey was an African story the movie would have been all black actors.

if they remove everything Greek from it then it's not The Odyssey but a generic fantasy film. I might aswell go watch repeats of Xena Warrior Princess

Exactly, word to word. Trying to articulate the obvious, that Greeks are left out, and receive hate from comments is sad.

As a Greek, thank you. Greek mythology was never pure fantasy. It grew out of a religion, a society and a storytelling tradition, rooted in real places Greeks still walk through and still reference daily. The Iliad and the Odyssey are taught to us as children and stay with us as part of the culture, the inheritance and the spirit of being Greek. They were gifted to the world long ago, and the world rightly calls them a 2,700 year old foundation of Western literature. Which is what makes the irony worth naming plainly: a film that claims inclusion as its virtue, then could not manage the bare minimum of it toward the people, the language and the living culture whose story it was built on.

I think its less about being accurate to the source material and more about the sheer disdain everyone involved appears to have for it. Truth or fiction aside, these stories shaped many of Europe’s most influential cultures.

This is not Odyssey. It is a movie named as “The stories of Ulysses” by Christopher Nolan. To compare the original Odyssey with this film is a blasphemy

This is exactly what I think too. The Odyssey is a founding cultural myth for the Greeks, not a buffet that Hollywood elites can mine and pay themselves tens of millions of dollars for a few months work, (which is why the movie ends up looking cheap, the budget went into their pockets instead of on costumes, sets, vfx) these A-Listers whose only values are to grab clout and stroke their own ego. Cultural artifacts like The Odyssey need to be protected like UNESCO heritage sites, what is wrong with Hollywood, they’re always trying to appropriate Mediterranean culture. l love your content by the way! I always learn so much! :)

Homer lived and composed his epics in Archaic age, the myths were from bronze age. For both Homer and classic age Greeks the depiction of the myths of the bronze age came from the evolution of the constant presence of mythology in their lives, in their Art, architecture, coinage, athletic games, theatrical games, religion etc. Non stop. Was their culture.
