@author_matthewflagler: Thousands of Indigenous children were removed from their families during a period now known as the Sixties Scoop. Many were placed with non-Indigenous foster or adoptive families, often far from their communities, languages, and cultures. While many child welfare workers believed they were acting in children’s best interests, the system frequently failed to recognize the impacts of poverty, colonial policies, and Indigenous ways of raising families. In this episode of my Canada: Truth & Reconciliation series, we explore what the Sixties Scoop was, why it happened, and why its effects are still being felt today. This isn’t about assigning guilt to people alive today. It’s about understanding a chapter of Canadian history that remains within living memory. If we want meaningful conversations about reconciliation, we first need to understand the history. #canada #sixtiesscoop #IndigenousTikTok #residentialschool #canadianhistory

Thank you for this. Reconciliation will never be enough (but that’s not up to me), but we must try. ❤️🇨🇦🎶

That was me and my 2 brothers. I was born in 1969. Barely knew my mother and my people. The homes i was placed in were brutal with beatings for the slightest issue which we didn’t understand. Years of abuse all while being told i was a dirty sinner. Messed us up for life

when I was a kid (88/89) I watched the movie, "Where the Spirit Lives", about the 60s scoop. I suggest everyone watches it as it really shows the impact of what happened from the viewpoint of an Indigenous girl. I still cry when I think about it.
