Saying something like “you shouldn’t be Christian because it was brought to you by colonisers ” is alrd just a genetic fallacy. Idk why nobody ever points that out.

Her perspective of Christianity is rooted in whiteness. Remember Nat and Harriet were ministers.

I think a lot of assumptions these people have is very often coming from of more westernized version of Christianity. Many people do not know about the origins of the faith or how certain series of events unfolded over time regarding the faith and end up making gross assumptions because of it!

I think the source of the biggest misconception against Christianity is the inability to differentiate between what the doctrine of the faith actually says vs what individuals within the institutions do. almost every argument against Christianity I have heard so far is always one that mentions the errors of fallible humans and never what the actual doctrine says

It helps to remind ourselves that often times when you hear “critiques” of Christianity online, especially in short form content, it’s not a critique of historic, apostolic Christianity. It’s a critique of American Evangelical Protestantism (and Calvinism sometimes).

the argument that Christianity is patriarchal drives me nuts. I was raised devout (nondemonational/Lutheran). 1 Corinthians goes into this: women, obey your husbands as you love and obey God. THE NEXT VERSE: Husbands, love your wives like Christ loved the church. Do you know how high of a standard that is for men?? 😮‍💨 it took me a long time to find a guy who genuinely does his best to do that every day! it is not for the faint of heart lol.

You were speaking all facts. Don’t forget Simon of Cyrene who helped Jesus carry the cross was African as well. Black people aren’t new to it at all!

there's literally a book in a Bible about a woman who saved her people from an evil king and then became queen (Esther)

I’m a neuroscientist, and I think you’ll appreciate this framing as a medical student: people forget the Bible is a collection of writings, composed across centuries by multiple authors. The Bible is data. And what do we know about data? You have to think about context and source at all times. Distilling “meaning” from it is genuinely tricky — but it’s a skill you can build, the same way you build discernment interpreting a painting, a film, or the results of an experiment. It takes practice. That’s the point. Faith is a practice too. The Bible was assembled by humans, but once you actually dissect and study it, you see it for what it is: centuries of data tracing one group’s evolving relationship with God. So many people think practicing Christianity is just “do this, don’t do that, don’t drink, don’t have sex” — without ever committing to the harder, more uncomfortable work of actually sifting through the data.

I agree with most of what you said. But as an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian, I still see a lot of patriarchal practices. Like many priests do not support women serving in ministry, and women are often discouraged from asking questions. the church still facilitates marriages between young girls and older men, while failing to recognize abuse within these relationships once they are married. You might say this is due to culture rather than religion, but we cannot ignore the fact that the church itself allows these practices to happen within its doors.

Another point to add is that the different Christian Denomination (which are in the hundreds) that broke away from their parent church, did that because they questioned what was preached and left to seek out their own truth. This can only be found in Christianity.
