The catacombs of Tuna el-Gebel formed the vast sacred necropolis of ancient Hermopolis, the city of the god Thoth. Deep underground, long galleries and chambers held millions of mummified ibises and thousands of baboons — both regarded as living manifestations of Thoth, god of wisdom, writing, and the moon. The tunnels, mainly from the Late, Ptolemaic, and Roman periods, may extend for several kilometers beneath the desert. A particularly atmospheric part of the complex is the subterranean Thoth chapel with the baboon mummy and stone sarcophagi. The underground cult chapels once served as ritual spaces where priests performed ceremonies before the sacred animals were placed in niches, jars, or coffins within the galleries. The cult functioned almost like a sacred industry. Huge numbers of ibises and baboons were bred and raised in temple precincts or “holy zoos” so pilgrims could buy them as votive offerings to Thoth. After ritual mummification, the animals were buried in the catacombs to carry the prayers of the donor to the god.
