It has one of the world's oldest histories, with ancient civilizations such as the Kingdom of Aksum and the Land of Punt playing important roles in trade across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Over centuries, the region became a crossroads for African, Arab, and Asian cultures through commerce, migration, and the spread of religions like Christianity and Islam. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the region came under European colonial rule, although Ethiopia largely maintained its independence.
