Nah, only reading the classics is elitist. You should be reading a wide range of genres to widen your knowledge base. From Romantacy to political non-fiction and all inbetween!

Why is it pretentious to learn about artists? You’re encouraging daily creativity, so art research/understanding should track. Artists are regular people too. Please debunk the idea that art is pretension. Art is one of the best aspects of our otherwise mundane lives.

I'd put The Odyssey as a classic worth reading. Especially now in the light of the Nolan film. Seeing the difference between the original text and what this one modern director decided to keep or change is illuminating.

As an English teacher—you’re wrong about the books one. Contemporary literature is vastly diverse, relevant, and creative. Not that classic literature can’t be, but to say it’s inherently better or more “intelligent” than contemporary literature is simply ignorant.
