First of all,I don’t hate Barbara.I just don’t like her as a character, and here’s why.(Everyone has their own opinion, and that’s completely okay.) First,Barbara was originally written as being older than Dick.Later,DC reduced the age gap because the writers thought it would be cool to pair the first Robin with the first Batgirl. She was around 25 when they kissed while Dick was still Robin (I don’t remember the exact issue, though).
Second,I don’t like how controlling and judgmental she is in many comics. For example, when Jason returned after everything he went through, instead of showing empathy, she criticized the way he dealt with his trauma.Barbara had people around her to support her after the Joker attacked her,but Jason didn’t.He was a 15-year-old boy who was beaten to death with a crowbar, died, and came back deeply traumatized. You’d think Barbara,as another victim of the Joker, would understand him better, but instead she judged him.At one point she basically tells Jason that whatever happened to him was a long time ago and has nothing to do with her.Third, Nightwing Annual #2 is centered around Dick and Barbara spending the night together right before Dick’s wedding to Starfire fell apart. In that story,Barbara tells Dick:
“She doesn’t know you, Dick. She’s a creature of emotion. She’s exotic, but she is not your equal.” To me, this comes across as arrogant.Calling Starfire—someone who fought beside Dick for years, led the Titans with him,and knew him better than almost anyone an “exotic creature of emotion” who isn’t his equal feels like the writers were trying to diminish Dick and Kory’s relationship. It also made Barbara come across as jealous and dismissive toward another woman.(I’m not excusing Dick’s actions in that story either.)
