@jamaalburkmar: If I sound disappointed it’s because I found this to be a very good film that I that I wished could have been a great one. #theodyssey #odyssey #whattowatch
He basically told the story as if Odysseus were Aeneas…

Weirdly enough Travis Scott and Robert Pattinson were the only two ultra famous celebrities that didn't bother me at all. Tom Holland's character reminded me too much of spiderman so that was extremely distracting to me personally. Over all a nice movie.

I agree with the celebrity piece. It’s not that someone is black or trans or whatever it’s that it’s just too many celebrities at once.

I think Nolan likes directing a movie more than he likes to tell a story. he's more interested in the spectacle and exploring his technical ability.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but Odysseus's biggest flaw is his arrogance. If he'd kept his mouth shut for just a few more minutes and not revealed his identity to Polyphemus, he would have been home in a matter of months.

I struggled with their accents, it was too American. It didn’t sound or feel Greek in any way when it comes to the speech of the film.

We have lost touch with how inspiring and gripping it can be to watch a unknown or smaller actor absolutely body a role. Instead we are constantly churning out the same names and keeping nostalgia and familiarity alive but losing characters. I used to only know actors characters because thats what they made me think of. Now I feel I know their names and personal business to much to see the character they are portraying (I dont ever consume much content but the world feels so driven to know these people personally that actors dont feel like they are acting anymore, just a name to sell a movie)

Why is no one talking about how bad the American accent is in the movie and how it automatically takes you back to the reality that you’re watching a movie. “MOM” and “DAD” is absolutely insane in a movie rooted in Greek mythology 🥴 were the terms “mother” and “father” unavailable???

This was my criticism of Tenet. Nolan didn’t trust us to follow the plot so all the characters were just lifeless vessels explaining the plot

That's why the casting in stuff like GOT and a knight of the seven kingdoms is great, you see the characters, not celebs playing dress up.

I’ve been wondering about this. The version of Odysseus I feel most familiar with is he being generally kind of a dick .

I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. Best casting? John Leguizamo. He did incredible and really disappeared into his role

why can we no longer have characters who are morally grey and complex?

it's not just odysseus who's a complex character that he flattened... 😭😭 circe and calypso too which is frustrating bc they're very intriguing and morally grey to some extent but oh well..

Now THIS is how you do film review. So thorough, curious and as objective as film reviews go without feeling the need to blindly praise the film yet appreciate the good

Your review made me realized that Nolan’s Odysseus is like how Nolan portrayed Oppenheimer. Guilt is attached on the main character, where we as an audience felt some sympathy to them towards the end even though they did something that is morally bad. Thanks for making me think 🥰
