@brad_huebner: #duet with @BigBodyOfficial You answered yourself in the video. The value is on the eye of the customer. Either the price is worth it or it's not worth it to them. This isn't price gouging by the way.
I saw this original video and it gave me anxiety seeing it then. Seeing it on your stream is giving me equal anxiety. Contractors and any other service-based companies (including lawyers and doctors) are not a commodity that can have a "Fair Market Price". Everything is relative in these industries because of skill and expertise to achieve "X" result, and he is exactly right that the value is determined solely by the person paying for the service. There should be no other discussion outside of the relationship that the homeowner has with the contractor in terms of what THEIR value is.

BigBodyOfficial :
To clarify: my company isn’t cheap by any means. We’re better than the handyman on Facebook that can do it for cheaper, which is one reason we charge more. Perhaps I should remake this video, because my bigger concern is charging customers for things they don’t need to increase the ticket value. I agree with your sentiment, but still think the large companies in my area that want to charge an old lady $27k to rewire her house, when literally all she needed was one breaker.

It doesnt matter "what the customer is willing to pay". Cost is based on what it costs to run the business, and complete the project accordingly. They either afford it or not.

Who determines what’s “fair”? Your market or competition shouldn’t and can’t dictate what you charge

What’s fair is subject to change, depending on what kind of value you bring to the table and what kind of value the customer sees in your work. Not to mention that every Contracter is not the same some have a higher overhead than others.

Yeah, it’s “worth” whatever the contractor is charging. It’s a customer’s job to decide if it fits Into their budget or if they need or want to go with a different contractor. “Fair” is a relative term.

what dictates the prices are material+labor+overhead there is no "market rate"

as an independent contractor I charge for the result and that's the time it takes to fix it when you think?

So he wants things for his prices instead of the actual contractors prices.

Fair market price? What’s that? Been hearing this for 30 years and still haven’t seen/heard what a fair market rate is.

Is a really interesting topic because you wanna be paid for the work you do and you wanna be compensated well but some people take that to a whole Nother level I know companies in my area the charge three times more than everybody else, that’s absolutely price gouging

This is why I genuinely always tell my clients to get three different quotes and compare not just numbers but value ,experience ,communication

@roofing.and.construction :
What determines fair?.... because the last 5 contractors charged you or your friends between $100 to $150 then thats the fair range?..... NO. Fair is what the contractor bills you. its what they are worth. when a client thinks a contractors bill is not fair then it simply means that client is shopping in the wrong mall.
