Chapter 5 — A Small Change One week passed. Charlotte was slowly getting used to Engfa's demanding schedule. She learned which meetings needed preparation, which documents Engfa wanted reviewed twice, and—most importantly—when not to disturb her. Their relationship remained professional. Nothing more. But something had changed. Engfa had started noticing little things. Charlotte always arrived early. She never complained about staying late. And whenever someone from another department needed help, Charlotte would assist them without hesitation. One morning, P'Sun watched Charlotte helping a new employee organize some documents. He smiled. “You really can't say no to anyone, can you?” Charlotte laughed. “They needed help.” “You're too kind.” Before Charlotte could answer, Engfa walked out of her office. She saw the interaction. “Charlotte.” Charlotte immediately stood. “Yes, Ma'am?” “Come inside.” “Yes.” She followed Engfa into the office. Engfa handed her a folder. “I need these delivered to the legal department.” “I'll take care of it.” Charlotte turned to leave. “Charlotte.” She looked back. “Have you eaten?” Charlotte blinked. “I'm sorry?” “Lunch.” “Oh.” She smiled. “Not yet.” Engfa frowned slightly. “Go eat first.” Charlotte stared at her. “But the documents—” “They can wait thirty minutes.” “Yes, Ma'am.” Charlotte left. Engfa returned to her desk. She didn't understand why she had asked. It was a simple question. Yet somehow, she had started noticing whether Charlotte had eaten, whether she was tired, and whether she was working too late. Engfa shook her head. “She needs to take care of herself.” That's all. At lunch, Charlotte sat alone in the employee cafeteria. She opened her phone and checked her messages. A message from Kirk appeared. Kirk: Did you eat? Charlotte smiled. Charlotte: Yes. Another message arrived. Kirk: I sent the payment for P'Champ's medicine. Charlotte immediately sighed. She typed: Charlotte: Kirk, you don't have to keep doing this. His reply came quickly. Kirk: I know. I want to. Charlotte stared at the screen. She appreciated his kindness. But she couldn't give him something she didn't feel. Across the cafeteria, Engfa happened to walk past. She saw Charlotte smiling at her phone. She didn't know who she was talking to. For some reason, Engfa slowed down. Then she continued walking. She told herself it didn't matter. After all… Charlotte was simply her secretary. And Engfa had no reason to care who made her smile.
