@swimperfect.co: Some Wednesday wisdom from a swim instructor of 10 years. Swim lessons are a process. The beginning might look a little rough but like everything else, practice makes perfect. Whether that’s teaching them at home or hiring an instructor, them being hesitant at first is normal! #swimperfect #misscallie #swiminstructor #swimlessons #learntoswim
Heavy on “everyone hates the floatttt” hahaha. As a swim instructor, I always tell the parents that it’s the hardest part to teach.

They also hate brushing their teeth every day and getting into a car seat but we do it anyway. So. DO IT anyway. It’s a temporary discomfort for a lifetime of peace.

as an instructor i always say “it’s okay if they’re uncomfortable. discomfort is an unavoidable part of profound learning and development” some parents are more ready than others to handle that LOL

Desperately needed this. My daughter had her first lesson yesterday and all she did was scream LOUD. I was so embarrassed and other parents were whispering. I felt so defeated and almost just took the loss on the cost never to return, but I want her to learn how to be safe.

I’m middle of week 4 for ISR. She still cries every single day. She cries when the little boy before her gets out, immediately starts crying hahah

My son has been in swim lessons for over month and the 1st day he was terrified. He’s now isn’t scared, but he is terrified to put his head in the water (to float) and to even blow bubbles. Pls tell me this is all normal! He’s 3 y/o.

We don’t have our own pool but go to the apartment pool as often as possible. How many times a week should I take my 15 month old to practice back float? She loves water and has no problem going under just being on her back.

Swimming is a key skill because it someday could save their life or even someone else’s. Push past the screaming and fussing parents. Swimming is too important.

I quit toddler swimming because a parent literally came into the water CLOTHED and ripped her daughter from me because her daughter was crying. As I parents I understand hating seeing ur kid uncomfortable but it’s sooo important to learn and get comfortable

My daughter with autism screamed for like 5 months during her swim lessons 😅😅😅 but now we’re almost 2 years in and she’s so close to being a little fish all by herself! Def almost cancelled multiple times but we live in az and everyone has pools!! So glad we toughed it out!!!

This! My teacher very respectfully asked if she could hold my son for a 10 count while he screamed bloody murder and I absolutely said yes. She upped it every class and today he floated for the first time willingly!

My kids cried every day for weeks. Like almost all of the weeks of their first year and their first refresher year. Then one day they just stopped crying and loved swimming and cried when it was time to get out of the pool.

Yup the first day of swim lessons with my 1 year old was literally just 45 minutes of screaming 😅😅

Would you suggest me giving my daughter time to get used to it , like if she’s screaming and crying so I just stop so she isn’t traumatized? I don’t want her to not go in the water completely! What do you suggest😭

Yesss! People are seeing the final product! I even had people tell me NOT to do swim lessons lessons because of videos they had seen. I really believe the videos were skills they had been doing for weeks!

My kid screamed and cried every single lesson when we first started ISR. For like 5 weeks straight. He was 1 at the time, 4 yo now and loves the water and is on to regular swim lessons now. He never really mastered the float but I still don’t regret giving him the foundation to build on.

Do you have any experience, or recommendations on where to start with a 3.5 yo with autism? My girl LOVES the water, and I really want to get her into lessons but she is non-verbal & uses an AAC device and I’m worried she won’t understand what to do. And I’m worried she’ll start to hate the water 😔

So real! Mine were swimming independently by 3/4 and for a long time there was lots of screaming and crying and I lost hope 😅… they come around with positivity and consistency

At what age do you think you can start teaching your children to swim on your own? I want so badly for my 1 year olds to do ISR but I can’t afford it. But I know how crucial it is for children to know how to swim/float and really want to teach them

Eh, I'd argue that tears are avoidable if you go slow and don't force it (not an ISR fan). It took a year and a half of weekly lessons for my son but no tears.

My almost six year old still screams through the beginning of every lesson. But he’s got to learn to swim.
