@ciara__anne: Everyone's obsessed with hitting £100k. I get it... it's a nice round number, it feels like a milestone, it's very "look how far I've come." But honestly? I think there's a number that matters way more than £100k, and almost nobody talks about it. It's called your Coast FI number, and once you understand it, it kind of changes how you think about work altogether. Coast FI (short for Coast Financial Independence, part of the wider FIRE movement - Financial Independence, Retire Early) is the point where you've invested enough money that, even if you never put in another penny, compound growth alone will grow it to your full retirement number by the time you decide to retire. You're not retired once you hit COAST FI - you still have to work and pay your bills. But you're "coasting" as you no longer have to save aggressively for the future, because the money you've already put away is going to get there on its own, just by sitting there and growing. That's why I think it matters more than an arbitrary £100k. £100k doesn't actually tell you anything about your future , it's just a number (although still is definitely an important milestone in your investing journey). Your Coast FI number tells you the exact point where the pressure comes off. It's the difference between "I have to grind and save every spare pound forever" and "I could take that lower-paying job I'd actually enjoy, or drop to four days, or stop stressing every time I don't hit my savings target this month" because the compounding is already doing the heavy lifting in the background.
