i love your insight. when hannibal says, “i gave you a gift,” he genuinely believes it. that’s what makes him so terrifying. he’s incapable of seeing his manipulation as abuse because, in his mind, he is elevating will. hannibal doesn’t merely want will’s affection. he wants ownership of will’s becoming.

Hannibal’s very selfish intentions of Will at the beginning is honestly what makes his devotion towards him in s3 much more impactful. Hannibal himself never expected to get so emotionally invested in anyone which he is the way that he is in s3. His behaviour and his decisions become increasingly impulsive and erratic because he feels he’s losing control of himself, he feels like his person suit is getting forcefully ripped off by no one other than Will.

s1!hannibal would definitely feel that s3!hannibal was weak, and post-s3!hannibal would definitely feel Superior to s1!hannibal (if not just for being with will, but also because he knows what s1!Hannibal will eventually also go through) at least imo 🙂↕️the irritation at will in s1 is entirely gone by s3 part 2, and replaced with fondness no matter what will does. at least imo 🙂↕️evidence: Hannibal making digs about everyone and the most will gets is a ‘what a cunning boy you are’ and a ‘came to get the old scent’ (forgot the exact quote lol) even the dig ‘how’s the wife’ is borne out of his jealousy

the subtlety in this show is beautiful, you do it so much justice! i always wished people would talk more about this scene because i found it as eerie as it was sweet—hannibal's irritation that he didn't get to hang out with will melting away to delight when he hears his analysis on the case. the way he "nudges" will in the right direction, then disarms him with a perfect read on the ripper's motif, because... well, it IS the killer LOL literally just a girl in love ❤️obsessed w your videos ^.^

I don’t think hannibal was mort concerned about being stood up than will’s dissociation, I think he was just downplaying it as he did the whole season so he could continue inducing encephalitis without letting will find any treatment

Idk if anyone is even gonna read this comment and some people in this comment section have already kind of hit on this. But imo I feel like with a lot of these scene analysis videos, especially of s1 scenes, it feels like people kind of forget to think about Hannibal’s growing affection of Will, and only analyze them based off his selfish manipulation. Yes, he is not yet fully devoted to Will and he is still in the process of his—if you will—falling in love with him, but he still is. There are still glimmers of his growing affection towards Will in s1, and I feel like these analyses forget this in the face of his larger manipulation and selfish intentions. You can see in Hannibal’s face and in his tone of voice and actions that he is concerned for Will (even tho some of will’s problems are his own doing ie the losing time here). Mads Mikkelson is a very intentional actor; he gives Hannibal very intentional character quirks, like slightly shakey/fiddling hands when he is nervous, and he shifts his face and manner differently when he is looking at Will compared to other people. So, in s1, his seeming indifference of Will’s problems comes a lot from how his “person suit” is still very much on, but you can see how it very slowly is being ripped off. He didn’t come to Will here solely because of his selfish intentions. I’m not saying that he came with the express purpose of caring for Will and supporting him, but rather he is enacting this care in the only way he can while his person suit is still on. It is still influencing the way he acts and distances himself from Will verbally. He won’t ask “are you okay” but that question is still going to be in the back of his brain. Idk if that was super redundant or made any sense but all that said i love these videos a lot lol it’s just input that i’ve been wanting to make
