Because the brain was often partially dissolved and extracted through the nasal passage, facial bones and the nose were highly susceptible to collapsing. To counteract this and preserve the distinctive facial features needed for the soul in the afterlife, New Kingdom embalmers carefully stuffed the nasal cavities of Ramesside kings, like Ramesses II. In modern times, Egyptologists and forensic scientists have used this anatomical footprint to identify and study these rulers using: X-rays and Xeroradiography: Non-invasive imaging initially revealed that embalmers inserted objects like animal bones to provide structural support to the nasal bones.
