They just do not want to claim that mantle yet until all the economic underpinning in the smaller economies are in place to transition from Pax Americana to Pax Sinica. The next 25 years at most the change will be here. Taiwan seems set to reunify with China by 2030. By 2050 Chinas dominance will be acknowledged internationally.

For the British empire everything was manufactured in GB. After WW I & II Britain had borrowed too much from the US and the US took over as the premier manufacturer till the 1980’s. The US then started borrowing (mostly from Asia) to maintain their position. China is now the premier manufacturer. That will last until they are supplanted.
