I get so much hate for this, but as an elementary school teacher, it’s crazy to me when my coworkers (who also teach reading) tell me that they hate to read and haven’t read a book since high school. It isn’t a flex, and then they complain that their students hate to read, when they are actively part of the issue.

A lot of my friends started reading recently so not all hope is lost just yet! I think people have a negative connotation about reading because of school and having to decipher each hidden message then write five essays about it, which takes the fun away, at least that’s what my friends say. Now, after finding genres they like and not having to do tests on it, they love it! And that’s not to say picking up themes and hidden messages isn’t important because that’s what a book truly means; a message for us to learn at the end, but not something that’s forced upon us and made to do to determine our grades/gpa. Another great thing is joining book clubs! It’s made me read a book every month even when I was in a slump so if you are able, book clubs are amazing to help you stay on track!

I pay my kids to read 😂. Not alot but it got my daughter started and now she begs me to order more books from the library all the time. I dont think reading is ending

As someone who loves reading now but hated it in high school/college, I really think expanding the genres taught in English classes would help a lot. I personally found reading classics incredibly boring, but I think you can teach the same techniques of analyzing text or using literary devices with a sci-fi, fantasy, or thriller book!

I’ve noticed a ton of people starting to read again after a number of years, maybe even a decade of not reading. I am one of those people too! I was a huge bookworm as a child to my early college years, but once I graduated and started working I completely stopped. I only started reading again within the last few years (and I’ll be 40 this year!) so my point I guess is, I don’t think the end is here and believe my story is not unique. Having said that, the child literacy aspect may be true (having 2 elementary aged boys who don’t care for reading). It hurts my soul that they don’t want to pick up a book when really that’s MY only entertainment. Not for lack of trying to get them to read, but It’s definitely hard with children and technology and I can definitely see how kids will cry over an iPad over their parents.

I also think that there are different forms of reading, I wanted to get my little sister (who is in middle school) to start reading more like me so I knew that giving her a full novel would not work which is why I bought for her a bunch of graphic novel and mangas and she enjoyed reading them a lot, and I just bought her the first 2 books in the Percy Jackson series. I also got 2 of my friends to start reading as well and we now borrow books from each other. I think typically these articles don’t include readers who read comic books, mangas, graphic novels also as a student myself I tend to find them excluding people who read research paper on the regular like students and my father who is a professor who yes he doesn’t read a book but every weekend he is always reading a new research paper

Years ago I had a friend who worked at a sports bar. Her job was right down the street from my work. So I would get off work and stop by her bar. I would sit in her section order food and drink and then I would read. I caught so much crap for being in a bar reading a book. I just wanted to see my friend, show support, eat, and read. Don’t be afraid to read where ever you want! Love this!

I think we are at a point where people see the dangers of mobile phones and social media. it will take time to correct but it can happen. I have been teaching my daughter the importance of reading but we have actually recently been listening to audiobooks together and she is obsessed by the books (mistborn and stomlight) audiobooks are definitely good for those struggling with time to read. also I would recommend to everyone to read at least 5 to 10 pages every night as it helps you sleep

I do think you ( and booktok) are helping. People look to you and other influencers for their next read. I’ve seen you give some real masterpieces 5 stars and a book like Daggermouth 5 stars. Now for the life of me I don’t see how you can give a book like Daggermouth 5 star, but I think in doing so, you are making reading more accessible to all readers.

I have so many thoughts. First, reading books is a skill you absolutely have to Practice as an adult. You have to learn to make reading part of your routine, not just wait for a non existent good time. I do think there is good news for the book industry - the Romantasy genre has created tons of new readers, and some of them read other things too! No one should be ashamed of what they read, but if it's really an issue, read on a kindle so no one can tell. I do tell people about the specific books I'm reading all the time, including you! Occasionally someone else even reads one. I just started The Fifth Season
