On a practical note, the basics take far less energy. Fern can outlast mages that are, on paper, more powerful than she is. Big flashy or complicated spells take a lot more mana. It’s mage rope-a-dope.

So Frieren told Fern to only use the basics, which carries with it the implication that she did teach her more advanced magic. One has to wonder what kind of threat it would take for Fern to bust out on of those spells.

SPOLIER ALERT ⚠️: Frieren taught Fern elven. Fern can read elven. Its not a common skill. She taught Fern to kill them quick and take pleasure in the pursuit of magic.
