@izzcal: I used to think the most awkward thing that could happen was flying to another city only to get stood up by the person you were supposed to meet at the airport. Turns out, I was wrong. Because nothing compares to standing in an airport, waiting for your ex to show up for the vacation the two of you booked months ago. Back when forever still sounded believable. Back before everything fell apart. Rough, isn't it? I'd been waiting near the luggage drop-off long enough to start feeling stupid. "Is she really going to stand me up?" I muttered into my phone. "She could've at least told me she wasn't coming." I shifted the phone against my shoulder and lifted my suitcase onto the weighing scale. Before I could even grab the handle again, someone effortlessly pulled it off. She was here. "I'll call you back," I said quietly before ending the call. I turned to face her, taking my suitcase from her hand and pulling it back to my side. "I thought you weren't coming." One of my brows lifted on its own. Lena let out a small laugh. "I paid for my ticket," she said with an easy shrug. "I'd rather not let it go to waste." She stepped ahead of me to check in her luggage. Once she was done, she glanced over her shoulder. "I'll get that for you." She reached toward my duffel bag. I turned away before she could touch it. "I can manage." The words came out sharper than I intended. I hated whatever this was. Couldn't we just pretend we were strangers? Strangers who used to know each other. Strangers who once spent hours arguing over which seats to book because we'd always dreamed of flying business class together. Together. That was all we ever wanted back then. "I apologize for making you wait." Lena pulled out a chair for me once we reached the lounge. I hated that too. I hated how gentle she was acting after I'd spent weeks convincing myself she was someone worth hating. "Water, right?" she asked, setting her purse down. "You still want water?" There she went again. Being kind. My phone buzzed relentlessly in my pocket. The group chat. Of course. “Okayyyy, are you two back together?” “I knew that trip wasn't going to waste!” “Just make up already!!” They were unbelievable. I turned off my phone before I could torture myself any further. "I called the hotel earlier," Lena said casually, taking a sip of her coffee. "I had our reservation changed." She slid a cup of water and a croissant across the table toward me. "We'll have separate rooms." Separate rooms. "Oh." The word slipped out before I could stop it. She looked up. I cleared my throat. "Oh... yeah. Great. Thanks." I tried to play it cool, like I didn't care. I was fine with it... I think. When boarding finally began, Lena walked a few steps ahead of me. The flight attendant led us to our seats. Then Lena helped me tucked my things away before I could, and quietly made sure everything I needed was within reach. Just like before. She hadn't changed. Every little habit I'd fallen in love with…. They were all still there. The cabin lights dimmed as everyone settled in for the overnight flight. Just before closing her eyes, she spoke so softly. "I'm glad you still decided to take this trip with me." I turned toward her. She was already looking back at me. Her eyes were still as warm as I remembered. For a second, I almost forgot. Almost. Then every memory of how we fell apart came rushing back. So I smiled. A small, polite smile. The kind you give a stranger because that's what she was now.
