In The Mentalist, Patrick Jane didn’t identify Red John through a single clue. He gradually narrowed the suspect pool over several seasons. By the start of Season 6, he had reduced it to seven suspects (not five). That list was then reduced further as people were eliminated until only the real Red John remained. Here’s how he got there: 1. He focused on people with the right access and intelligence Jane concluded that Red John was: • Exceptionally intelligent and patient. • Someone who could move around without attracting suspicion. • Someone with access to law enforcement information. • Someone capable of recruiting and controlling others. This pointed him toward people in or connected to law enforcement and government. 2. The “Tiger, Tiger” clue Before dying, Red John’s accomplice gave Jane the clue: “Tiger, Tiger.” Jane eventually discovered this referred to the secret organization known as the Blake Association, whose members quoted William Blake’s poem The Tyger to identify one another. Sophie Miller’s psychological profile Jane spoke with Red John’s former psychiatrist, Sophie Miller. She described Red John as someone who: • Wasn’t physically imposing. • Had a pleasant, reassuring voice. • Displayed strong narcissistic and manipulative traits. • Could make people trust him quickly. Jane compared this profile with the remaining candidates. 6. The pigeon phobia Jane also learned Red John had an unusual fear of birds, especially pigeons. He used this behavioral clue to test suspects. 7. The final shortlist After combining: • everyone he’d shaken hands with, • the psychological profile, • access to the Blake Association, • opportunity, • behavioral traits, • and years of investigation, Jane announced his shortlist of seven suspects: 1.
