@trench.bench: In the August of 1961, East Germany began sealing its border to West Berlin to prevent people from fleeing out of the East which began by guarding rolls of barbed wire. It wasn’t until August 15, 1961, that 19-year-old Conrad Schumann leaped over this border into West Berlin where he was immediately escorted to safety by the West Berlin police.
