When the school psychologist diagnosed my son as ADHD and wanted to put him directly on medication, our pediatrician referred us to our on child psychiatrist to see if the findings were similar. He said that schools are quick to diagnose because they get extra funding. Turns out.. both psych Drs agreed… he’s very much ADHD 😂

There was a second part to this, actually. Some high-profile hospitals boasted that if he ever did the experiment again, they would DEFINITELY catch the fakers and discredit his entire experiment. So he said fine, I’ll send out (I forget how many) fake patients to various hospitals and see if you’re as clever as you think. So these elite hospitals made a big deal out of “catching” the fake patients and releasing them, smugly publishing that he’d failed in his attempt to fool them. Only for Rosenhan to come out and admit, he hadn’t sent any other fake patients to any hospital. He just said he did. So those elitist doctors released actual patients who were really suffering, just pretending they’d “caught” his planted patients, and released them back into society. They were proven to have ZERO idea what they were doing. Terrifying.

This has always been one of my "irrational" fears... 😳 getting stuck in the psychiatric hospital, no one believing me, then actually going crazy bc no one believed me!!

This study reminds me of women in the late 1800s and early 1900s being put in sanitariums for being "hysterical" because they did not fit the societal norms of the era. literally nothing wrong with these women other than society said there was.

Honestly that’s so similar to having an “invisible” chronic illness. Imagine trying to get help for pain and illness but the tests always come back juuuuuuat slightly off so they keep telling you it’s anxiety.

I was misdiagnosed with bipolar type 2 in my early twenties by a psychiatrist who did not even listen to anything I said and just put me on lithium, to which I had an awful reaction because I didn’t need it. 10 years later I was formally diagnosed by a neurologist with autism but no hospital will remove the misdiagnosis from my records, so I can no longer get medical care because I’m treated like a risk and everything I say is seen as paranoia or manic episodes. I was admitted with a severe kidney infection and asked if “the voices told you that you were in pain?”?!?!?! And then they put me in the psych ward. For a kidney infection. So I can literally no longer trust medical professionals.

This!! I’m a nurse, and something that will always stick with me, and why I never want to work with kids, when I was in clinicals on the peds floor there was a child who had a whole list of mental disorders(like psychotic disorders) and to me she was a kid who needed consistency. I didn’t see a single sign of the disorders she was labeled with. It still bothers me to this day years later because I don’t know if she actually had those disorders or if she was just labeled

This is 100% a real issue. A doctor accidentally put a bipolar diagnosis in my records because a diagnosis I do have (not mental health related at all) has a similar DX code. It was literally a typo. I’ve been trying to get it removed for years. I still get asked questions related to being “bipolar” and even after explaining the situation I sometimes am treated differently. It’s really scary how easily people can be labeled.

This is STILL HAPPENING to foster children. When they make a mistake its blown way out of proportion because they're in the spotlight. Smoke weed ONCE? Get kicked out. Go to a party and get into a fight? Youre sent to a facility for mental and behavioral health. Dont get along with one of the other kids in group home? Theyre leveled up again into even more restrictive settings. Dont do amazing in school? leveled up again. Get caught going to your bf house? Suddenly you are having problematic sexualized behaviors and leveled up yet again. It makes kids hopeless - resulting in more bad behavioral because theyre already be punished and labeled as bad kids - and all because their parents didnt want them. Its horrific

It is the same as chronic illness. Have pain, fatigue,bleeding for years but tests come back "normal" and you tell them your pain is a 7 on an average day but you are not believed because you are not on the floor sobbing every day

This is how the troubled teen institution I went to worked. They told you you had issues, everything you did was depression, suicidal ideation, severe anxiety, and just made things up to keep you there longer then needed. It’s much more common then you’d think

This happened when the patriarchal control system started to get really pushed by the church. I don't consider myself a feminist but the historical controls over women that came down at the same times and in line with the church's writings are astounding.

I worked in a state run psychiatric hospital for 13 years. The amount of times I had to explain to doctors patient's cultural differences and customs were not a sign of illness.
