Do your research people!!! A dust storm is any wind event that blows dirt around. A haboob is a specific type of intense, wall-like dust storm created exclusively by downdrafts and strong outflow winds from a collapsing thunderstorm

i’ve lived in arizona all my 31 years of life and the only people who refuse to call it a haboob (which is what it is by scientific definition btw, we don’t just call it that for no reason) have a problem with the middle east connotation lol

Linguistically, Arizona's weather terminology was already heavily rooted in Arabic. Robert Ingram, the same Phoenix meteorologist who pushed for "haboob," is the man who successfully convinced local TV stations in the 1950s to start using the word "monsoon" (which comes from the Arabic word mausim, meaning "season"). Because Arizona meteorologists had already adopted one Arabic word to describe the summer storm season, adopting "haboob" to describe the specific dust walls produced by those exact same summer storms was a natural, logical scientific progression.
