@theerickylee: By the end of this year, totaling monthly premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket contributions, I will have spent over $13,000. People shouldn’t be afraid of getting sick, forced to cram treatments into the end of the year, and they shouldn’t be taken advantage of by insurances companies who prey on folks needing care. For those curious, my insurance company is @Ambetter Health available through the Illinois Insurance Marketplace. Up until this point, I thought they were OK.

The way we have to monitor this stuff is infuriating. I had a procedure recently & called every single office involved (anesthesiologist, the doctor, the actual hospital) to MAKE SURE every one of them (& the building where it was taking place!) was covered under my insurance. I then made them all send me an estimate of charges after insurance. I’ve heard too many stories & I absolutely will not be blindsided with thousands of dollars. US health insurance is a joke. I’m so glad your doctor’s office said something to you.
