@francescooknz: We spent $89,000 on solar and an electric car. Here's how the maths is actually playing out… Some months the power company pays us. Even in the coldest months of winter we're spending around $200 - and that covers the car too. My rough numbers put the return at about 15.6%, with everything paid back in around six and a half years. Then it's decades of basically free power and fuel. 10kwh a day..really needs to be x2 that x3 for heavy users to actually use power without having to think about it, then we really talking. So does it just feed back into the grid so no batteries?

And so you still pay $30 ish a month to have power on as a line charge . Ppl never me mention that . Also those with mains gas can’t just swop its aground 8-10+ to break even to moved from mains gas to fulll electric let alone solar…

We got panels without batteries. My summoner power bill is about $20, and winter bill is $200 right in the middle of winter. It is worth of the money.

Does this number include interest? Also does total include buying a electric car?

If you borrow the money at green loan you are using borrowed money and saving more than you borrow. that's called profit. The profit then pays for the capital cost. Self funding but not quite as loans are 3 yrs and it doesn't save enough money to pay off in 3 yrs. There has to be a complicated tax to follow under labour

Did this include a battery? I don't know much about solar, but have heard having a battery as well helps it go far on the bills, Congrats on the savings!

If you do some basic math it's not going to start actually saving you money until about 15 years.

Right, so the $89,000 includes the purchase of the car? I was thinking you must have got a huge solar system if it cost that much.

In nz they only pay around 2 cents a kw that you put back into the grid was a bit higher but it got cut. Government will start a new tax. Can guarantee it.

Hey so many questions! What region of NZ do you live in? Coldest temps in winter? Do you heat your home and water with electricity?

$89,000 ÷ 312 ( weeks in 6 years ) = $285 a week. $89,000 invested & returning 3% gets you $220 a month.
