@legendairymilk: Have you ever been shamed for nursing your toddler? Extended breastfeeders can face a ton of social backlash and criticism for something society deems as too taboo. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, alongside continued breastfeeding up to the second year and beyond. Breastmilk composition has been studied extensively in the first year but there is a serious lack of data regarding composition beyond 1 and 2 years postpartum. A group of researchers sought to analyze total fat, protein and carbohydrates in breastmilk from mothers nursing for under 12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months and over 24 months. They found that breastmilk produced after 1 year of lactation is extraordinarily rich in fat and has a higher energy content than breastmilk produced during the first 6 months of lactation. Mothers with the highest fat and protein in their milk were past 2 years postpartum! Breastmilk doesn’t lose its nutritional value after the first year, and in fact, it’s still a nutritional powerhouse for your growing child. We should be able to choose how long we wish to breastfeed, whether it’s three weeks or three years. The shaming of women who choose to continue nursing after whatever arbitrary time they are “supposed” to wean needs to end. Study: Czosnykowska-Łukacka M, Królak-Olejnik B, Orczyk-Pawiłowicz M. Breast Milk Macronutrient Components in Prolonged Lactation.
