I am Scottish and I was recently in New Orleans. We were talking to a waitress and she told us she loved our accents, we said “We love yours too!” And she replied “I don’t have an accent.” We tried to explain that she in-fact had a strong Louisiana accent and that it’s impossible not to have an accent. She wouldn’t accept and kept on insisting she didn’t have one. So yes, Americans are the worst for it lol

I used to think I had zero accent (New England but not anything like Bostonian or New Yorker) but now my family is half French… and I can hear the americanness in everything I say to my in-laws..

I think there is important context here in that Americans who say “they don’t have an accent” mean they don’t have an accent ascribable to any one specific place in the US. Like NY or Boston. Obviously an American accent is an accent. They’re talking about inside of the US specifically.

"Accent" means "distinctive pronunciation". It's entirely contextual. A Russian or a New York accent would be distinctive in Iowa, but not in Russia or New York. Just like a red pillow is an accent on a blue couch but would not be an accent on a red couch. If someone says, " I don't speak differently from the people in my group or area" and you respond with, " but you do speak differently to other groups or areas" that would be really disingenuous and pedantic. But that's exactly what accent means. When millions of educated, intelligent people use a word or expression you think is wrong, you are the one that is misunderstanding it.

Nailed it. When most people say, “I don’t have an accent”, what they mean is “I don’t have a non-native accent.” The word “accent” has a few slightly different meanings.

I've tried so hard to explain this to some Americans before 😭 I don't want to offend any Americans but a worrying amount of them will insist they don't have an accent and struggle to understand what I mean by an accent.

I feel like this “correction” is an “ackually” intentionally missing the point. Modernism media empires result in a universal type of English spoken all over the world regardless of where they’re from. That is the “no accent” people are referring to. It’s not like Americans are making up some delusion. The same “accent” is spoken across channels and regions by people from different places. There’s still some minor differences but doesn’t seem crazy to imagine those disappearing within a generation or two.

Idky so many ppl say only Americans would say that cus that’s 100% not true lol. Where im from (Gabon) French is our main language and ppl will look at you dead in the eyes and say they have no accent when they have the thickest accent ever lmao. I think it’s cuz since everyone around them sounds pretty much the same for them that accent is the norm! 😭😭

everyone in these comments dont understand what americans mean by “i dont have an accent”, it means that they don’t have an accent that isnt anything apart from an american accent. the US is a massive country so its uncommon to hear someone speak english with an accent other than a neutral american one
