Great tits time their eggs so their chicks hatch when caterpillars are everywhere. Those caterpillars are the babies’ main food source during their first days of life. The problem is that warmer springs are causing the caterpillars to appear earlier than they used to. If the chicks hatch too late, a lot of that food is already gone. Researchers call this a “timing mismatch,” and it’s becoming more common as temperatures change faster than some species can adapt.
