To all the people struggling with an avoidant, I used to be one, then I fell in love with one and that when I truly started to understand what it was. Him and I struggled and even split up because of this. Even though I was hurt, I still offered him a safe space with me, whenever HE was ready, while also leaving some space between us for myself, because obviously I needed to heal myself before being a therapist to the cause of my pain. He saw my safeness while also seeing my independence and fortunately was able to see the error of his ways. The trick is to not beg for their attention. It makes them believe that the less affection they show you, the more affection they get out of it. You truly do have to put yourself first. TRULY. Not just so that they’ll notice. Do it for YOU, not just for show. He ended up begging me to come back for days, and even then I wasn’t ready to just let him come back with no consequences. He had to prove to me that he was worth my time and effort again. Now we’re both in the healthiest relationship either of us have ever been in. We communicate flawlessly and we live together now. I wouldn’t change anything about our unorthodox and rocky start, because now I feel like we truly understand every part about each other. By no means am I saying “be a bird.” Don’t go back to someone who consistently shows you no love and no care, because no one’s deserves that. Instead, show your avoidant that they can be an intimate and safe person while maintaining their independence by example. I’m no professional though, just sharing my experiences with anyone who may need the insight.
