Our big rule in our book club is that you’re not allowed to be mad at spoilers if you didn’t finish the book. It means we can talk about the book in full detail without having to censor or skip over thoughts/reactions/interpretations just because 1 person didn’t finish in time

Now all I need is 4 people who want to be in a book club

Me and my friends made a book club of classic lit to combat brain rot. It was difficult but our inventive is that if we don’t show up to the meeting then we get charged $50. The money is then split between every other member

12 people, 26 years. My 3 would be
1. Stick to a consistent day and format ( 2ndThursday, 1/2 hour for catching up. 5-10 minutes for business/up coming books. 1+ hour for discussion)
2. Always have a facilitator who is prepared ( Ours is whoever chooses the book, or the English teacher in the group will sub)
3. Respect each other's choices, ( try new books/ genres, and don't rate them. Whoever picked the book feels defensive or hurt)

Biggest improvement with my BC is we’ve started choosing books 2 months out so we all have time to source from our respective libraries.

Alternatively - one year ago I started an album club.. it’s like a book club but for music! There are 7 of us. Our next meeting will be our awards ceremony. I’m so excited 🤩 low barrier for participation, great excuse to get together

I have the unfortunate problem of nobody in my book club actually discussing the book. sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who's interested in the books at all.

10 years, 8-10 people. We don't have a book every month. We come every month with all we read and share it. Then at the end of every meeting. I share every book mentioned and theres usually over 20 books discussed. It supports mood readers.

4 years, 3 people. We take turns where one person suggests 3 books and the other 2 have to decide. No theme but obviously common interests. Once a month we meet in a restaurant over a nice dinner!

we're coming up on book 50 (approximately 1 per month) in my six-person book club! we started out by voting on books, now we have a "booktatorship" where one person chooses each month

We meet virtually (almost) weekly and split each book into smaller chunks so we can check in and all stay on track. StoryGraph buddy reads help us remember what we want to talk about and guide the conversation. Going on year 3!

I feel it's important to give grace if somebody's having a rough time and cannot bring a snack or didn't read the book. ...but on the flip side don't always show up without bringing a snack or reading the book lol

We have a book club, and at the end of the year each person gets an award too. Such as most likely to rate 5 stars and most likely to cry

Love these rules—have you read On Reading Well by Karen Swallow Prior? It’s all about novels that exhibit virtue.

This is so helpful... can you share what would be a good format for when we meet? do you have prepared questions to discuss? is there discussion more open but semi guided?

Haha, our book club is like 30 people, each month is a theme week and every month we decorate to that book theme. We all feel like the meet up is the reward as we also give out little treasures.

My book club has been going for almost 23 continuous years (with only a few early years hiatus for big life stuff). We have had as few as 5 and as many as 12. 8-10 is the sweet spot. We pick all our books for the coming year at our Christmas party. We’ve tried different methods but the one that has stuck is each member bringing 2-3 choices and letting the group vote so everyone has at least one book. Each person leads their own book discussion. Our general rule is the book must be one you wouldn’t just read “for fun,” there has to be something thematically worth discussing. We read a lot of classics and lit fic, then try to have one non fiction or memoir a year. Oh, and you have to have good food 😜 We each bring a dish to every meeting, often reflecting the book or season.
