We often think that if somebody knows lots of stuff, they must be intelligent. But, according to Plutarch, this is often the opposite of what intelligence actually is. Plutarch once wrote that ‘the mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.’ Most of us will remember from school long and resentful hours, sitting in classes that we hated, listening to teachers drone on about a subject we couldn't get excited about. We sat there like some trapped victim — a caged and empty vessel into which others put their ideas. Any educational system that becomes obsessed with examination and certification will inevitably get it wrong. If we measure success by how far somebody's head is crammed with trivia, then we will turn the mind into a vessel. But, as Plutarch argued, this is not what it means to learn. This is not what it means to have a mind. The German philosopher Franz Brentano argued that the mind is something that reaches out into the world. It is active and energetic. It’s an inquisitive and investigative spotlight that is constantly projecting itself out into the world. The best educators, and the best people, really are those who work with that light. They broaden and sharpen its focus. A good education is an invitation. It doesn't treat you as a vessel to be filled, but seeks to draw the best out from you because the mind is a fiery and brilliant radiance, and we need to do the best to make it shine as brightly as it can.
