@redditstories_doggo: My younger daughter spends hours and hours studying for her STEM classes just to get an average grade in her classes, so I basically told her to give up her "dreams" of going to med school because she wasn't cut out for it. Plus three updates. Posted by: u/aitamotherornot #reddit #redditstories #redditreadings #storytime #minecraftparkour #redditdoggo
everyone in the comments needs to finish watching the video… she was lying about studying and was partying and buying cheat sheets to get regular grades. clearly OP was right and knew her daughter wasn’t cut out for it. yall can be mad but she hit the nail dead on the head 😭

... why is getting average grades bad? IT'S THE AVERAGE, most people get those grades. you don't have to be top of the class to succeed in your career.

medical student here 👋👋👋, I was horrible at math and I failed 11th grade chemistry & has to retake it. I'm now in my 4th year of Med school. You don't have to be a genius to be a doctor just hard working and competent. 5% of my class aces their exams, 15% are above average students the other 80% of us mere mortals work ourselves to the bone so we can pass our very hard exams. This isn't greys anatomy, not everyone has to be a world renowned surgeon.

I fear the comments are just not acknowledging the fact that op is a literal doctor herself, she knows first hand the work load

The fact she didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell her family about a life changing traumatic event is saying a LOT

YTA bc you waited until she was in college before saying something. You didn’t try to foster other traits when she was younger

By the end is seems like the twist is that the younger daughter is actually doing worse so the mom is valid but imo I can smell what kind of household this was for her growing up I just know oldest girl was the favourite and thats why the youngest is so hellbent on proving she's not worthless. Definitely adds to her mental health problems beyond the trauma event the mom mentioned occurred. Poor poor girl.

I read a little deeper into the words and guesstimate? Assumed? That the younger daughter maybe didn't want to be a doctor, she might have just wanted the same relationship with her mom that her sister did. That line the mom said "shes not like us" was CRUEL! The fact that she used a phrase so callous tells me the younger daughter has tried her entire life to measure up to the older daughter, and never could. How could she with the mom thinking a phrase like "shes not like us"???!!! Maybe I'm projecting here a bit, but that phrase is truely horrible. AND TO ACTUALLY SAY IT TO HER DAUGHTER? I doubt the younger daughter told the mom the truth about her feelings a out her relationship as the talks they had were harsh enough without adding that little tidbit.

Its awful that I can probably guess exactly what happened to her to ruin her mental health like that since it's so common in colleges :(

Poor girl, she obviously doesn’t want to become a doctor just trying to live up to her mothers expectations

If this was on “AITH” Reddit I would 100% say she is. Not because she wasn’t right to bring up her concerns of her daughter. But the way she did it, over the phone, with no explanation or alternatives. That’s her daughter who potentially has the dream to become a doctor and her hearing that might crush her dreams, all done by her own mother. There is definitely a better way to say it, and maybe something that would even make her feel better. But anyway, doesn’t matter, really unfortunate that her daughter is struggling like she is

The people in comments are being obtuse on purpose when it’s clear the mother is singling out her child and in fact acting maliciously whether she intents to do so or not. The real question is why an experienced doctor isn’t able to approach a more sensitive subject in a more sensible and respectful manner? Could there be a slight possibility it’s because she didn’t care enough to?

Why are the people who are telling you to stay till the end completely ignoring the life event that changed everything for the daughter and made her feel numb about everything and turn to substances? We probably all know what happened and yall are just making her out to be some kind of brat? Gross

I did poorly in school, but thanks to my dad always encouraging me, I ended up graduating at the top of my program. I was hired by a major tech company in my first year of college, and I even graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Then there are parents like this who wonder why their kids don't talk to them anymore.
