I think a lot of people misunderstand anger. Anger is often treated like the problem when, in reality, it’s frequently the symptom. Underneath anger is usually something else: hurt, rejection, fear, betrayal, humiliation, loneliness, feeling unheard, or years of unresolved pain. Telling someone to “work on your anger” without ever asking what created it is like mopping up water without fixing the broken pipe. You may reduce the visible mess, but you’ve done nothing about the source.
Understanding why you’re angry and taking responsibility for how you express it are two different things. Someone can have completely valid reasons for their anger and still need to learn healthier ways to communicate it. Both can be true at the same time. Real healing isn’t just asking, “Why am I angry?” It’s also asking, “Now that I know why, what do I do with it?” That’s where growth begins; not by denying the pain that caused the anger, but by refusing to let that pain keep deciding how you treat yourself and everyone around you.
