And WW2 submarines weren't like modern subs. You weren't underwater for months at a time, the sun ran on the surface except during combat.

was a cook on a sub similar to this SS343. subs like this didn't go down too deep for very long, always on surface after dark, cooking while the boat rocked and rolled wasn't easy

How often did they get to see the sky? Were crew members pretty much exclusively in the sub or did they often get to go up to the surface and see a small amount of the outside world?
