Yep, abused victims go back to what they know, sadly. For them to get better, they need to learn their self-worth on their own and let go. People don't understand Zukos character its sad and some people even think he is a villain 😭

I think it comes from a difference in how people see Boys/Men as abuse victims. We can be victimized just as much as girls/women can, but socially they are viewed as different things.

I think we’re going to see this conflict of Katara believing Zuko didn’t care (like in the animation) play out in s3 and we might even get more scenes where Zuko explains exactly this. Dallas did an interview where he said that after the conversation with Katara, Zuko thought he knew what he wanted to do, but when Azula apologized for their mother’s death, and made a plea for him to come home, the love he had for his sister and mother muddied that decision. People don’t realize that Katara was so upset because she felt like Zuko just didn’t care like she did and was manipulating her, which he wasn’t (also why when people claim that Zuko was manipulating Katara in TSR, it is a blatant misunderstanding of what the episode is trying to portray).

Agree with all of this. In the animated series, you can SEE the desperation in Zuko’s attacks in the crystal catacombs. Even his little line of “I have changed” to Katara shows how much he needs to believe his struggle and pain has to have meant something. His arc is really powerful for abuse victims.

I love that Zuko actually told Katara what his father did to him in the LA. Presumably the gang knew in the cartoon, but if I recall, there's no scene of them actually finding out where Zuko's scar came from. All we get is Zuko telling Katara in the crystal catacombs that he used to think his scar defined him, or something along those lines. The way I always interpreted Zuko's choice (in the cartoon, anyway) is that it came down in part to one of his greatest strengths: his tenacity. His mum tells us that's what she loves about him, that he keeps getting up and going onward. But his tenacity is also one of his biggest weaknesses. While his tenacity means he's eventually able to get to where he needs to go (joining Aang), it also means that once he sets out on a path he struggles to turn away from it until he has exhausted every possible avenue of getting to where he **wants** to go and has nearly burned down every bridge that could get him back to where he **needs** to go. When Zuko is imprisoned with Katara, he has aaaalmost successfully given up on his desire to return home and pursue the love of his father. He pretty much realises that is a "lost cause" that is never going to happen. He has made genuine effort into starting a new life with new goals, and he is being genuine with Katara. But what happens right before Zuko betrayed Katara? Azula shows up and offers Zuko one last avenue to get to his father's love that he hasn't yet exhausted. And he just isn't at a place in his development where he's quite capable of resisting the urge to go down that road. The LA definitely has some subtle and some not-so-subtle differences there, but that's a big part of how I've understood his choice from the cartoon.

That’s his sister, it’s his family that he’s been trying to fight for all this time. He’s been exiled for years, OF COURSE when Azula (who knows what she’s doing) talks to him about their family, about him being pardoned and all that he’s going to take it… especially at this point.

he connected with katara. but it’s always been obvious he wants to go home and live hoping that his father can be different especially in natla where we see his mom going stick together and ozai manipulating him and azula going “i want zuko back” he can be empathetic but he wanted to go home

Zuko was a child who was banished so young. The poor boy suffered. In the catacombs with katara, I saw two scared and angry children who needed somebody to help them. The little hope they get at times, how they cling to it like a fragile prayer…my poor babies.
