The Wind Rises by Zhou Shen This is originally a Japanese song titled Yakimochi or Jealousy by Takahashi Yu, and then adapted to Mandarin in 2018 after obtaining the official authorization from the Japanese copyright owner. Zhou Shen covered this song several times, this version is from BiliBili 11th Anniversary Speech Celebration in 2020. Translation credits: Machine translation I retranslated the whole song and got another headache. Very poetic and lots of metaphors! I really love this song, it's about nostalgia and reflection on the passage of time, very beautifully woven. It's a journey from passion to disillusionment to acceptance. I try not to change the poetic sentences as best as I could, but it result in some ambiguous words. Below is my interpretation of some lines, please correct me if I'm wrong: "[I] lingered, [bound] by everything" is a duality of the previous verse. Before, he's lingering because everything seems new to him. Now, his lingering is because he's holding on to the nostalgia, which he's lost. "Years turn like pages, each face a fleeting visage" means the passage of time is like a book of life phases. Each phase changed his perspective, which sometimes altered by experience, which in turn makes him lost his old selves. Not really sure if the other person in this song, 'you' or 'her', is his mom or past self, but I'd like to think of her as his mom. "I poured my youth into her form and my fingertips strummed a vibrant summer" means he dedicated his youth passionately to her. "On this brief journey, [this] walking and pausing in turns have accumulated [its] gaps [between us]" means by leaving home, there's now a sense of drifting apart between him and his mom, resulted in emotional distance. "Uncertain [if I'm] caressing a reminiscence or just a wisp of emotion" means he's not sure if what he's recalling is a real memory or just a lingering emotion. "Twilight conceals your faltering steps, [as you] approach the hidden painting by the bed" means his aging mom disappears into the painting, so she's just a memory. "The 'you' in the painting [gently] speaks with [your] head bowed" means he 'hears' the words his mom said in the past. The head bowed could implied tenderness or fatigue (as she's grown older). "I still marvel at the grandeur of the world, [yet remain] entranced by the sweet whispers of childhood" is a duality of earlier lines which he's entranced by the world's dreamlike whisper; by the endless possibilities. Now, after facing the world, he's still acknowledged its grandeur, but it's no longer his everything. He's also softly tethered to the innocent affection of their childhood. "No truth and falsehood remains; [I] no longer struggle, nor does mockery matters [to me]" is another duality line. Before, he's confused and can't differentiate between reality and illusion, but still brave the world. But now, as he's disillusioned, the distinction between reality and illusion has faded. He stopped fighting reality and his past concerns no longer matter. "Whatever stirred the heart drifts away with the wind" the last duality line. At first, whatever moved his heart; be it longing, dreams or ambition; he chased after it. But now, that 'whatever' has gone with the wind. He acknowledged that some things are meant to be carried away by time, yet he still cherish the memories. #songlyrics #reflective
