lose the torque wrench. tighten until snug then give another ¹/4 turn. you'll feel the bolt actually crush the washer and done.

Defective torque wrench isn't your fault. You did everything right. Not knowing what it was supposed to feel like your first time doing it is an experience thing not a it's your fault thing.

Unfortunately, the best way to learn is to jump in and try, make mistakes, and do it better next time.

Invest in a couple jack stands. I wouldn’t trust my life to those plastic ramps.

You haven’t really wrenched on cars until you’ve broken something by over-torquing a bolt. I’ve done it thrice. 😂

use a crawler to slide around , maybe a shower cap for your hair , use a pet pee pad on top of a large plastic garbage bag to catch the oil drips/splatter

wanna prevent this forever and make the oil change process easier? get a Fumoto drain valve. one time install and then oil changes are tool-free going forward

also check that torque specs say ft-lbs and not in-lbs. oil drain plugs shouldn't be much, maybe 25-30 ft-lbs.

I like this attitude. That’s the idea. Keep doing it and you will save lots of money, and you get to learn cool stuff.

Next torque wrench you get, put a 19mm on it and test it on a wheel lug nut first. Set it to the torque for the drain plug and use it on the wheel. It should click long before the lug nut actually turns and you'll know the wrench works.

A dramatic reading of me watching: "Good. Up on the ramps. Seems to be going fine. Not bad. Ok, oil in the drain pan, good. Oh. Torque wrench? Huh. Oh. Oh no. OH NNNOOOOOOOOOO."

That's how most of us learn, by making mistakes. Now that you know, would you try doing it again?

A torque wrench for an oil change?

oh bad luck. I usually use my non-dominant hand to tighten the drain plug because it doesn't need to be terribly tight. you learn by making mistakes, keep pushing!

I've been doing oil changes on my vehicles since I got my first car at 19. I've never torqued a single drain bolt. Get them hand tight and turn about a quarter turn. That will generally put you in the 25ft lbs range which is fine for a drain plug

You really don't need a torque wrench for an oil pan nut but it is kind of a feel that you have to get used to. just tight and then "a little more".

Make sure you block the back wheels whenever you put a car up on ramps like this! It’s also never a bad idea to make some wood cribs and put those behind the front wheels too just in case the front ramps were to ever fail

You know even good mechanics strip bolts sometimes. As you work on stuff you will start to get a feel for how tight things should be. But I give you props for attempting to do it yourself! The good thing is you will be able to do it next time. Plus when you do it yourself you can actually put good oil in it and not worry about whatever cheap oil the shop would have put in it. I always run full-synthetic and do 5k intervals, less if you're towing or driving it hard.
