Owners of Elvis Presley’s Catalog Sue Anthropic for $41.1 Million Over Claims It Used His Songs to Train Claude The owners of Elvis Presley’s music catalog have filed a lawsuit against an AI company. According to a complaint filed in California on Oct. 23, the plaintiffs include Authentic Brands Group, Raleigh Music Publishing, and several trusts. They accuse Anthropic of using 274 Presley songs without permission to help train its Claude AI models. The complaint alleges Anthropic took “illicit copies” of Presley’s copyrighted lyrics. The plaintiffs say they regularly license his songs and pay rightsholders. They claim Anthropic used the music with no license and no payment. The filing uses a striking comparison. It says Anthropic found a “workaround” to the idea of monkeys with typewriters eventually writing Hamlet. In the complaint’s words, the company found “mimicry” to be “the much easier pursuit.” The plaintiffs are asking for a jury trial. They want $150,000 per song, which they estimate at $41.1 million. Anthropic is fighting back. A spokesperson told PEOPLE the company “disagree[s] with the claims and intend[s] to defend this case fully.” The complaint says there have allegedly been at least six lawsuits in the same court over music copyright. Just last week, the music company Reservoir also sued Anthropic over lyrics and melodies from artists like Madonna and Joni Mitchell. Anthropic told Billboard it disagreed with those allegations too. Do you think AI companies should have to pay for the music they train on? #elvispresley #Anthropic #Claude #Copyright #AI
