@williamburkegarrett49: Montana's Calliope hummingbirds may be the smallest breeding birds in North America, but they're master builders. Mama builds the entire nest by herself using soft plant fluff like willow or thistle down, moss, and sticky spider silk. The spider silk holds everything together while allowing the tiny cup-shaped nest to stretch as the chicks grow-a remarkable bit of natural engineering. To keep the nest hidden from predators, she carefully decorates the outside with bits of bark and lichen so it blends almost perfectly into the branch. Most people could walk right past one without ever noticing it's there. It's amazing to think that a nest no bigger than a walnut can safely raise the next generation of these incredible little birds.
