Ten days after her death on Spantik, a volunteer team of climbers recovered Asma Mushtaq’s body from around 6,250 metres. The 34-year-old Pakistani mountaineer had successfully reached the 7,027-metre summit of Spantik on August 20 as part of a Pakistani women’s expedition. During the descent, Mushtaq developed a serious high-altitude medical emergency at around 6,400 metres and later died on the mountain. RECOVERY ATTEMPTS HALTED Several attempts were made to retrieve her body, but heavy snowfall and strong winds repeatedly disrupted the efforts. A recovery team reached Camp 3 on August 26 and searched for several hours, but fresh snow had covered the area and they were unable to locate her body. With conditions worsening, the team was forced to retreat. BODY FOUND NEAR CAMP 3 A volunteer team of high-altitude climbers from Arandu village in Pakistan's Shigar region later launched another recovery mission on Spantik. On August 31, they began the operation at around 3 a.m. and located Mushtaq’s body roughly eight hours later, at about 11 a.m., near Camp 3 at an elevation of approximately 6,250 metres. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the volunteers carried out the recovery operation using their own funds. RESPONSE TO BE INVESTIGATED Baltistan Division Commissioner Kamal Khan said the tour operator had violated mountaineering rules by failing to arrange a ground recovery team and helicopter evacuation from Base Camp to Skardu. He also said no insurance had been arranged for helicopter evacuation and that the mandatory briefing and debriefing had not been conducted.
